The Break-Even Calculation

Reserve effective fee = $550 - $300 travel credit = $250. Preferred fee = $95. Difference = $155/year. The Reserve earns 1x more point per dollar on travel. To justify the $155 extra fee at 2.0 cents per point: $155 / (1 x 0.02) = $7,750 in annual travel spend. If you spend $7,750+/year on travel, the Reserve earns enough extra points to cover the fee difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Chase Sapphire Reserve worth it?
The Chase Sapphire Reserve is worth it if you spend at least $4,000/year on travel (after the $300 credit) and use the Priority Pass lounge access at least 3-4 times per year. At that usage level, the $300 credit reduces the effective fee to $250. Three Priority Pass lounge visits at $30-50 per visit save $90-150. Add the 50% bonus on travel portal redemptions and the Reserve becomes clearly worthwhile. If you do not use lounges and spend under $5,000/year on travel, the Preferred delivers better net value.
Can I downgrade the Chase Sapphire Reserve to the Preferred?
Yes. Call Chase and request a product change from Sapphire Reserve to Sapphire Preferred. This does not count as a new application. You will not receive the Preferred's sign-up bonus (only new applicants get that). Your points balance carries over. The product change usually takes effect within 1-3 business days. Note: you cannot product-change to a Freedom card directly from a Sapphire - you must downgrade to Preferred first if you want the option later.
Do Chase Sapphire cards have travel insurance?
Yes, Chase Sapphire cards have the best travel insurance of any consumer credit card. Trip cancellation and interruption: up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip (must charge at least part of the trip to the card). Trip delay reimbursement: after 6 hours for the Reserve (12 hours for Preferred), covers up to $500 per ticket for meals and lodging. Primary rental car insurance: covers collision/comprehensive damage without going through your personal auto insurance. Baggage delay: up to $100/day for 3 days if bags delayed 6+ hours.
What are Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer partners?
Chase Ultimate Rewards transfers to 14 airline and hotel programs at 1:1 ratio: United MileagePlus, Southwest Rapid Rewards, British Airways Avios, Air Canada Aeroplan, Singapore KrisFlyer, Flying Blue (Air France/KLM), Iberia Plus, Aer Lingus, Emirates Skywards, JetBlue TrueBlue, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, World of Hyatt, IHG One Rewards, and Marriott Bonvoy. The most valuable transfers are to Hyatt (best hotel value in points) and United (strong international routing options).
Chase Sapphire Preferred vs Reserve - which has the better sign-up bonus?
Both cards currently offer 60,000 points after $4,000 spend in 3 months. At 2.0 cents per point via Hyatt or United transfers, that is $1,200 in travel value. The Preferred's $95 fee means you net roughly $1,105 in year one (after fee). The Reserve's $550 fee, minus the $300 travel credit you will earn back, means an effective year-one cost of $250 fee minus $300 credit = a $50 credit plus the 60k bonus. In year one, the Reserve can actually win on total net value if you use the travel credit, which resets annually.
